Last week I was provided with an opportunity to spend the day at Adventure World. Situated in Bibra Lake, 15 minutes south of the Perth CBD, it is Western Australia’s equivalent of Disneyland in California.
Opened in 1982 by Michael Edgely, the aim behind Adventure World was that you could have the adventures of a lifetime in one day, just for fun. I can still recall the jingle from the 1980s advertisement …”Adventure World, Adventure World – they made it just for fun”. Some 34 years later this philosophy still remains as do some of the original landmarks such as skull rock, the lagoon pool and bumper boats. Here is a photo I found of me on my first visit to Adventure World back in 1984 (don’t you love the outfits)?!.
Little Dragon Kingdom
I spent the day in and around Dragon Kingdom, a land created for children under 8. This section of the park takes on the theme of an enchanted land, set in medieval times where a Lovable Dragon, Yarli and his little sister Yarlotte live as well as their fairy friend, Flossy the Fairy.
The landscaped gardens with colourful flowers, lush greenery and mature trees offer numerous spots to lay out your picnic blanket taking refuge from the busy teenagers and thrill seeking adults on the northern side of the park.
Little rides for little people
The first activity my little princess wanted to try was the water attraction of Kingdom Falls. Reassuring for any parent or guardian of non-swimmers is the numerous lifesavers close by. We waded in the pools, anticipated water being dumped onto us from overhead buckets, slid down small water slides and stood under raining mushrooms. The paddling pool is clear, clean and inviting and for those of you who like a VIP experience, you can rent a cabana offering shade, sunbeds, fridge and a waiter!
From here we headed to Yarli’s barrel spin which my 5 year old loved. It brought back memories of me sitting in the spinning teacups at Disneyland – a memory my stomach remembered within minutes of going around and around.
From here, we tried The Little Leaper. My little princess loved this ride going up and down, up and down, offering a great view across the park at full height.
For those of you who remember the old Bounty’s Revenge (this once very popular ride sits now as decoration in the main park), there is a mini version – The Barnacle. The ship sways up and down, mimicking the swell of the ocean – again a ride my daughter loved but one my stomach was not quite sure of!
The Dragon Flyer was great fun. You sit in Yarli’s belly rotating around and around.
Across from the Dragon Flyer is the Dragon Express, a mini steel rollercoaster for kids. Regrettably, my little one wasn’t confident going on this ride so we just stood and watched before heading into a mini jeep to go on Yarli’s safari.
Behind Little Dragon Kingdom is the native wildlife attraction which allows children to view up close koalas, dingos, peacocks, kangaroos, emus and a wombat. We were very fortunate to see the nocturnal wombat wandering around his pen. He actually looked to be posing for my camera.
If you have ever dreamt of cuddling a koala, at Adventure World you can experience this for $20 including a cuddle, digital image and printed photo. Presently, other than Cohuna Wildlife Park, I believe Adventure World is the only other attraction in Perth that offers this truly unique and Australian experience. (Remember to wear your Camilla kaftan so you can pose like Oprah for a keepsake photo of your cuddle with a koala)!
We finished the day on the overhead pedal cars where we marvelled at all the big kids rides such as the Abys, Kraken, Inferno, Kahuna Falls and speed slides.
Finally, thank you to Adventure World for a day my daughters are still talking about. We certainly had a day of fun.
