A luxury escape in Bali
For those of you wanting a beautiful experience in Bali, I highly recommend a trip into the heart of the island, to Escape Nomade, a luxury tented escape situated just outside of Ubud.
Nestled between a few swaying palms, on top of deep gorge, Escape Nomade is set in among lush green rice terraces, an hour away from the traffic, crowds and heat of the more popular areas of Seminyak, Umalas and Cangu.
Six star luxury tents
Escape Nomade is the home of Dutch designer Anneke van Waesberghe. Her home takes your breathe away from the moment you step through the entrance all the way through to the ground floor mountain stream.
Located just out of Ubud, this beautiful Bali experience is a series of cream coloured tents, supported by teak pillars and woven ropes.
Anneke’s tents are not only her home but her show room – to buyers of six star luxury tents. Her tents sit in commanding contrast to the surrounding lush jungle. Here you can experience a slowness of pace, a step back in time and savour the magic of life in a six star luxury tent.
Experience Escape Nomade
I first visited Escape Nomade through a culinary journey organised through Nico Moretti of Urban Provider and the Alila Ubud’s then head chef Eelke Plasmeijer (Eelke now owns Ubud’s #1 restaurant Locavore – and just like most great eateries in Bali, Locavore is booked out days in advance). My little princess was then only 7 weeks old!
So charmed by this beautiful setting, a complete escape from the bustle of Bali, I bookmarked this experience for a special occasion.
High tea at Escape Nomade
With a welcoming smile, staff greet you at the entrance of this sanctuary where you become immersed in the world of Escape Nomade.
You feel as if you have stepped back into the 19th century, given a pith hat and fan before trailing behind your escort to the entrance of the first tent.
Welcome to Anneke’s house.
Anneke’s design of luxury tents extends to a range of luggage including a shaver case (which can be plumbed to allow water through its tap and basin), portable desk, suitcases and bags. Louis Vuitton like, examples of her work are placed through her sitting room holding art and antiques.
Day beds welcome you to sit, lounge, relax and draw in the surrounding scenery of grasses, reeds and trees. Serene.
The main tent
A decked path draws a straight line between Anneke’s home and Escape Nomade’s two main tents.
Lined by tall green grasses, the main tents offer respite from the sun and a wonderful place to soak up the vista, sip tea (or cocktails) and where you are served morsels both savoury and sweet.
Options include long lunches, afternoon teas, aperitifs and grazing dinners to celebrate any number of occasions.
Escape Nomade is where I celebrated my 40th birthday and is the most perfect setting for an engagement, intimate wedding, anniversary, milestone birthday, romantic getaway or just because you can.
At the foot of Escape Nomade is the Agung River. Here we were greeted by the cheers of the occasional white water rafter as well as a staff of six, tending to us like a Maharaja. I felt very spoilt to be sitting under the shade of a handheld parasol, the river ebbing at my side, fanned by one of Annekes staff while another massaged my feet in a petal bath. Bliss.
Perched a few metres from the rivers edge is a massage tent where one can relax and enjoy the tranquility of rural Bali. A Therapist kneads and sweeps your knots and worries away. Heaven.
My love of Bali is its people.
At Escape Nomade, local villagers invite you to experience part of their world through a performance of traditional dance. Girls dress in costume, mesmerising you with their eyes, hands and fingers as they dance a story in almost a trance. Gorgeous.
As the sunsets it’s time to go. Stars sparkle in the sky and fireflies twinkle through the rice fields. You’ll want to return.
A Bali experience
Escape Nomade is a little bit of heaven nestled in the heart of Bali. An experience. An adventure. A place to return.
I would like to thank Maria and Anneke of Escape Nomade for an amazing afternoon so I could capture some great images of this beautiful Bali escape.
To Mark Powell my photographer of Rockfish, Becky VanDijk of We Are Travel Girls, thankyou both for coming along and for your promotion of this blog post. Last but certainly not least, to my friend Marcia for joining me to experience Bali.
